Hughes was one of the most influential and important writers of the Harlem Renaissance, an African American artistic movement in the 1920s that celebrated black life and culture.

This is a splendid set of pieces, there is humour here but much poignancy and politicism too, and Betty Roe’s music compounds these factors making this historically interesting, as wellas an enjoyable work.
